Giorgio Armani, Fashion’s Enduring Maestro, Dies at 91

The world of fashion has lost one of its most influential figures. Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer who defined timeless elegance and reimagined modern tailoring, has passed away at the age of 91.

In an official statement, his family and employees shared: “Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication. In his spirit, we commit to protecting what he built and carrying it forward with respect, responsibility, and love.”

For over five decades, Armani shaped the global style conversation. He became Hollywood’s designer of choice, dressing icons like Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Angela Bassett, Margot Robbie, and Julianne Moore. His sleek suits, fluid gowns, and impeccable red carpet tailoring redefined glamour, making understated elegance a powerful statement.

Julia Roberts’ now-iconic Armani menswear suit at the 1990 Golden Globes remains etched in fashion history. Lady Gaga’s ethereal crystal embellished creations, his bespoke suits for Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight, and Richard Gere’s wardrobe in American Gigolo are just a few of the cultural moments Armani immortalized through clothing.

Born in Piacenza in 1934, Armani founded his namesake house in Milan in 1975, launching both men’s and women’s lines that would become synonymous with sophistication. Throughout his career, he preserved his fiercely private nature, allowing his creations to speak louder than words. His long-time partner and collaborator Sergio Galeotti remained central to his journey until Galeotti’s passing in 1985.

A visionary who once said, “Elegance is not about being noticed, it’s about being remembered,” Armani leaves behind not just a brand but an entire philosophy of style. His funeral will be held privately, honoring his wishes, while a chamber for public condolences will be open in Milan from September 6–7 at the Armani/Teatro.

Fashion will remember Giorgio Armani not just as a designer, but as the man who dressed the world with quiet confidence and lasting grace.
